Leeswood recognizes the negative impact businesses can have on the environment. We are committed to doing our part in finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint in our office and our construction sites alike.

Our Vision

A sense of pride in knowing we did our part to try to leave this world for the next generation in a better state than we found it.

Principles

We recognize we provide a necessary service for economic growth and development but we also recognize construction and demolition account for approximately 40% of the total waste stream in North America. For that reason we implement internal policies and procedures that must be followed, even if it is an added cost to us. We believe it is our Social Responsibility.
Leeswood is focused on 3 key areas:

  • Sustainability
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Green Building Practices

Sustainability

We are committed to reducing the impact the construction business has on the environment and encourages sustainable practices.

Recycling/Paper Usage/Environment

  1. We recycle plastic, glass, aluminum, paper and cardboard in the office and at all job sites. Where possible we encourage the use of washable dishes instead of “throw aways”.
  2. We have filtered water in the office to eliminate the use of bottle water and each job site is equipped with a water cooler and 18.9 litre refillable water jugs.
  3. Every location has a specified recycling collections area. We do not have scheduled collection, it is done on a “when filled” basis. Each Site Superintendent and our office manager have a personal responsibility to contact the collection agency only when required.
  4. We collect and recycle all our printer cartridges.
  5. We reuse binders, file folders, envelopes, boxes and printed all documents double sided where we can. Single sided paper is used only for proposals and drawings. In the event we have blank single sided paper, we use it for notes and calculations. We discourage paper usage where possible by distributing documents electronically and ask every employee to consider the environment before actually printing a document.
  6. All paper purchased is either recycled paper or FSC certified.
  7. We recycle all electronic equipment where applicable as well as batteries.
  8. All of our office furniture is recycled. Existing desks have all been resurfaced and many of our plans tables are old doors salvaged from job sites.
  9. We purchase non-toxic biodegradable cleaning products for our office.
  10. Our snow removal service does not use salt on the walkways and entrances. All products used are ecofriendly.
  11. We encourage our staff to keep their work space clean and free of obstructions. Our site trailers are an extension of our office and should be represented in such manner.

Energy Efficiency

Electricity/Water Consumption/HVAC/Transportation

  1. All areas within our office that have limited traffic flow, washrooms, warehouse etc., all have motion sensors. We encourage all employees to turn lights off when not in use.
  2. All appliances and office rated equipment are Energy Star rated or equivalent
  3. By 2014 all lights will be replaced with LED lighting
  4. Employees are encouraged to minimize water consumption
  5. By 2014 all toilets and bathroom fixtures will be low flow and/or motion sensored
  6. We have regular service and maintenance done on all HVAC equipment and do regularly scheduled filter replacements. Where possible our filters are reusable.
  7. Our heating system is programmed to turn down during off peak hours.
  8. We encourage unnecessary travel and have made all the latest tools available to our staff.
  9. Our office staff is free to work from home one day a week and we utilize tools such as email, conference calls, and video conferencing. Staff required to attend off site meeting are encouraged to carpool or use public transportation.

Green Building Practices

The policies and practices of Leeswood include incorporating the best practices of the USGBC and local and federal governing authorities. We also recognize that the goal of the USGBC is to divert 50% of the construction waste from Landfills, purchase 10% by cost of construction materials regionally, and to purchase 10% by cost of construction materials to include recycled materials.

Leeswood is committed to conforming to the Minimum Program Requirements, were possible, set forth by the USGBC.

Minimum Program Requirements are a list of basic characteristics that a project MUST possess to be eligible for certification under the LEED rating system. Some of these include but are not limited to:

  • Building footprint to land ratio
  • Parking capacity
  • Construction pollution
  • Fundamental Refrigerant Management
  • Storage and collection of recyclables
  • Indoor air quality during construction
  • Environmental Tobacco Smoke Controls
  • Water Efficiency

Leeswood does not always have control of such requirements as they are often driven by the client’s needs and requirements but we will point out where discrepancies exist.
As mentioned at the very least, we find it our social responsibility to do what we can as an organization and without exception and at no additional cost to the client, Leeswood will:

  1. Divert construction waste to landfills by providing separate containers to recycle, cardboard, metal, bricks, concrete, acoustic tiles, glass, plastic, gypsum, carpet and insulation.
  2. Equipment washing stations (waste water is removed from the site by the same source that provided it)
  3. Encourage onsite recycling for consumer products and provide the necessary containers
  4. If possible, purchase material with recycled content
  5. Purchase FSC Certified wood
  6. Purchase regional materials
  7. Purchase rapidly renewable products if it meets the clients requirements
